Bereavement, Grief and Loss Counselling in Sheffield

Bereavement, grief and loss can bring emotions that feel overwhelming and hard to make sense of. Counselling offers space to talk about your experience, express what you’re feeling and begin to find steadiness, understanding and gentle support as you adjust to life after loss.

Bereavement, grief and loss support

Bereavement and grief are natural parts of life, but the emotional impact of losing someone or something important can feel painful, confusing or difficult to manage.

You might notice waves of sadness, anger or guilt, or find yourself feeling detached, anxious or unlike your usual self. Grief can affect sleep, concentration and energy, making daily life feel harder to navigate. Having space to talk about what you’re feeling can really help.

Counselling offers time to explore your experience, make sense of your emotions and begin to find steadier ground. Together, we can find ways to help you feel more supported, peaceful and connected as you adjust to life after loss.

What you might notice

  • Waves of sadness or numbness
  • Anger, guilt or regret
  • Trouble sleeping or eating
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Loss of motivation or routine
  • Feeling detached from others
  • Struggling to adjust to change

Making sense of how you’re feeling

Grief counselling in Sheffield can help when you are coping with grief, adjusting after loss or trying to make sense of life after losing someone or something important to you.

Loss can affect every part of life emotionally, mentally and physically. Whether you are grieving a loved one, a relationship, a pregnancy, a pet or a phase of life, grief can bring intense emotions that shift from moment to moment and feel difficult to carry alone.

Whatever you may be experiencing right now, you do not have to make sense of it all alone. Taking time to understand what you are feeling can be an important first step towards feeling more supported, more grounded, and more connected to yourself again.

Many people spend a long time trying to cope quietly on their own, often minimising what they are carrying or feeling pressure to simply “get on with things”. Having space to pause, reflect and feel heard can help bring greater clarity, understanding and self-compassion during difficult periods of life.

Grief and loss can affect your confidence, relationships, identity and ability to cope day to day. Many people find themselves moving through a wide range of emotions, often without warning.

People often describe experiences such as:

  • Shock, emptiness or emotional numbness
  • Deep sadness or longing for the person or thing they have lost
  • Changes in sleep, appetite or physical wellbeing
  • Feeling detached from life as it was before
  • Finding everyday tasks harder to manage
  • Feeling lost, hopeless or unsure of their place in life
  • Relationship changes within family or friendships
  • Feeling isolated because your grief feels different to other people’s

Grief can feel overwhelming and deeply personal. Talking about what has happened and how it is affecting you can help you process your loss more gently and feel less alone while adjusting to life after loss.

  • Remembering and honouring the person, relationship or part of life you have lost
  • Finding ways to move through grief at your own pace
  • Coping with difficult emotions, triggers or significant dates
  • Reconnecting with meaning, identity or hope when the time feels right

Counsellor & Coach

Hi there! I'm Anne Raw

I’m Anne Raw, a Counsellor and Coach based in Sheffield. People often describe me as calm, present, thoughtful and easy to talk to, with a grounded sense of humour that helps lighten even the heavier moments.

I became a counsellor after many years of supporting people through the emotional impact of bereavement, grief and loss., and seeing how powerful it can be to have someone truly listen. That experience inspired me to train formally and offer others the same space for clarity, resilience and self-understanding.

Thank you!

Kind Words

My approach to grief and loss counselling

Everyone’s experience of grief and loss is different. My approach is gentle, calm and supportive, helping you make sense of what’s happened and find steadier ground as you begin to adjust.

I work integratively, drawing on different therapeutic approaches depending on what feels most helpful for you. We might explore the emotions, memories or changes your loss has brought, or focus on ways to manage day-to-day life while you heal. The aim is to help you understand your experience and begin to rebuild a sense of balance.

Together, we create a calm, compassionate space built on trust and care. You’ll be encouraged to explore at your own pace, supported with understanding as you begin to restore confidence, clarity and connection with yourself.

You don’t have to carry your grief alone. Counselling offers space to share your story, express what feels too heavy to hold and find gentle ways to cope. Together, we can work towards moments of calm, understanding and hope as you adjust to life after loss.

If you’d like to take that first step, I offer a free 20-minute chat to talk about what’s been happening and how I can support you.

Bereavement & Grief Counselling FAQs

If you’re thinking about starting counselling, you may have a few questions about how it all works. The answers below cover some of the most common things people ask when they’re considering getting started, from what to expect to how sessions are arranged and where they take place.
Is what I am feeling normal after a loss?
Yes, it is. Grief can feel like a wave that changes from one moment to the next.
You might feel sadness, anger, guilt or even relief, and then moments of calm before it all returns again.
These feelings are all part of the grieving process. There is no right or wrong way to grieve, only your way.

Why does grief feel so physical?
Grief affects both the mind and body. You might feel tired, heavy, tense or find it hard to sleep or eat.
These are natural reactions to loss. The body often carries what words cannot express.
Counselling can help you tune into what your body is telling you and find small ways to ease the strain while you adjust.

How long will it take to feel better?
There is no set timeline for grief. For some, the intensity softens after a few months; for others, it takes longer.
The goal is not to “get over” the loss but to learn how to live with it in a way that feels bearable.
Counselling can help you find steady ground again as you move through your own unique process.

Does losing a pet count as grief?
Absolutely. Pets are part of the family, and their loss can leave a real emptiness.
It is completely normal to grieve for them deeply.
Counselling offers a space to talk about your memories, love and sadness without judgement.
Your bond with them mattered, and it is okay to mourn that loss fully.

How can counselling help with bereavement?
Counselling provides a calm, confidential space where you can speak openly about your loss and the emotions that come with it.
We can explore memories, talk about guilt or anger, and find ways to carry your grief with more gentleness.
You do not have to go through it alone; together we can help you find moments of comfort and connection again.
